Blog #7 - Week Three Part Two
Editing!
We were super lucky with this project because one of our members, Natalie, has a pretty extensive editing background. That was one of the reasons we ventured into a film-based product to begin with, but I don't think any of us realized how necessary her level of proficiency would be for this project.
After the first week and a half, Nat edited a mock-up of the first 30 seconds, or "cold-open", so we could all get a feel for what the style of the piece would be. I think it really gave us a sense of direction to have a concrete example of what we were looking for.
Monday of week three, we all ventured out to Nat's house on the west side to collaboratively edit as much of the mockumentary as possible. Unfortunately, the computer containing the Premiere Pro project stopped working shortly after we arrived (terrifying!!!). Luckily all the work was saved, but unluckily this meant that most of the editing was postponed.
The next day, as Nat worked from home, the rest of us assisted remotely in whatever ways we could. I went through almost two hours of talking-head footage, writing down timestamps for each question and my thoughts on where it could fit in the final product for maximum relevance and comedic effect, and sending these lists over to Natalie. We also Zoomed roughly every few hours to watch through what had been done so far and give feedback, brainstorming ways to heighten the existent jokes or craft new ones through clever edits.
After it was done, we gathered on Wednesday with Ryan and TJ to watch through the finished product! It clocked in at about 55 minutes, which none of us expected to be able to accomplish, and it was actually very enjoyable to watch!
